4WD’ing and animal hunting for rabbits and kangaroos on the Nullarbor was a favourite pastime. I just used to love going out with Dad shooting in the 4WD drive with the spotlights on the roof, hitting the potholes, and finding rabbit burrows.
At a young age, Dad taught me how to shoot, gut, and skin rabbits and kangaroos, and also catch and gut fish. After shooting a few rabbits successfully, Dad now asked me if I wanted to have a crack at shooting a kangaroo. Of course, I wanted to, we hunt for a kangaroo, and when we find one, I begin to line it up within the scope of the 22 rifle.
Dad says, “Take a shot kid,” so I did, and I look and hope for a successful hit, but the kangaroo just appears stunned, so dad says “Have another go kid, before he takes off”. With my finger in the trigger, I aim, fire, and I watch with anticipation, but the roo just shakes his head a little.
Dad is worried the now injured roo will jump off, so Dad grabs the gun. Ready, aim fire. Dad gets a headshot with the first bullet, so the kangaroo is down.
We approach the Kangaroo, Dad looks to see if I had hit the kangaroo anywhere. Well, I did. I successfully gave the kangaroo a hole in each ear! I was chuffed. Both bullets had pierced each of the kangaroo’s ears.
