Noongar has Six Seasons
In Western Australia’s South West region, we have six Noongar seasons, which are determined by changes in the local wildlife and plants.
See the names below for the South West region of Western Australia for each of the Noongar seasons below.
- Birak (Dec – Jan)
- Bunuru (Feb -Mar)
- Djeran (Apr – May)
- Makuruv (Jun – Jul)
- Djilba (Aug – Sep)
- Kambarang (Oct – Nov)
Djilba (Aug – Sep) is the season I pick as my favorite season, and here’s why;
The Noongar Season ‘Djilba’ symbolises growth of wildflowers and plants and is presented by the colour pink. This is where the beautiful season starts, usually with yellow wildflowers appearing first.
Djilba is a transitional time of the year, and it has some very cold and clear days combining with warmer, rainy, and windy days with the occasional sunny day.
The birds are still nesting, so the swooping protective behaviour of the koolbardi (magpie), djidi djidi (willy wagtails) and chuck-a-luck (wattle birds) are abundant.
Having a variety of weather days, beautiful wildflowers, and wildlife developing right before eyes, it’s no wonder Djilba season is my favourite time of the year.
